All Things Considered, February 17, 2006 ยท Musician Ray Barretto has died at the age of 76. The musician straddled the worlds of jazz and Latin music in a career that spanned almost six decades. Barretto was known for his fearless experimentation with Latin, jazz and rythm and blues, and for helping popularize Salsa music.
I first started listening to Ray Barretto’s music back in 1971, maybe earlier. I’ve loved salsa ever since that time. I’m also a frustrated composer (jazz) but, I had fun while living in SF hanging out with musiciam friends and playing percussion during their rehearsals. They respected that I knew harmony and where to find the beat as I was often the person they listened to so that they could return after improvising. Peace brother Ray!
