Mangrove Mud Womp Fundraiser on Kickstarter launches Tuesday morning lasting 30+ days to help fund my public art residency. I hope I can convince some Broward schools to come out. I think they missed a Field Trip Grant offered by Target stores. I tried to round up some K-12 teachers, but school was not in session yet. Anyway, this major project will take place from September, 2011 to February, 2012! That includes the fundraising, of course.

Please, help out to make this project a reality!

These things puff up and die off pretty quickly. I haven’t been up the street yet today, but I’m sure it’s just about gone. There were two others coming up, with the white outer caps breaking through the wood chips.

I went on my longer walk yesterday afternoon of 6+ km, down where they’ll shoot off fireworks tonight. I like going a bit further, even though walking the opposite direction through the business district of Las Olas as times gets little crowds and I have to walk out in the street to keep my pace, even though it’s not terribly fast.

It’s a holiday, but I still have to work on some art, or read, or make something. I got invited out, but I wasn’t told exactly where. No email reply either. Time for another attempt, maybe. Otherwise, I’ll just head down to the beach and check out the fireworks later tonight.

There were a bunch of noisy kids in kayaks, and other playing upstream from me that just would not stop yelling and screaming. I guess that’s just the nature of the kids, although if they really wanted to enjoy nature while pointing out this and that creature, yelling certainly would scare off many more creatures than they ever got to see.

I guess I didn’t post this image here earlier, but now I need to. I’ve had an unwelcome visitor in my apartment tonight. A southern ring-necked snake. It was not full grown, and they don’t grow very large anyway. They are not dangerous. However, I suspect it may die if it doesn’t get out through some crack under a door, which is certainly how it got in. (The post below is from 16 May, 2011.)

Not sure how it got killed, but I suspect either a house cat, or attacked by birds. The mockingbirds are particularly aggressive right now since many have eggs to watch over. I got attacked by them on my Friday walk by the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale at NSU. There are quite a few trees on the Blockbuster plaza, and that’s where it happened. What’s the name of that plaza now anyway?

Ring-necked Snakes are found throughout most of the eastern U.S.. These diminutive snakes seldom grow longer than 12 inches. Ring-necked Snakes have smooth scales and a black or dark gray back, whereas the belly is a bright orange/yellow, often with a row of black spots. As the name implies, there is an obvious ring of orange/yellow around its neck. When alarmed or threatened, Ring-necked Snakes coil their tail like a corkscrew. These snakes are fairly secretive and may be found under logs and rocks in moist uplands, where they eat earthworms, slugs, small salamanders and small snakes.

“Untitled (insect eating plant)“

Since this is public space, and I am not one to go ruminating on life’s negativity (or ranting) in public, this space is generally focused on the images, objects, or the creative process, in part or whole. Those are the things that I feel are important for myself, the artist, involved in the creation of the work. There are other issues involved with the display (in the white cubic space), promotion, and sale of art. Some of those issues, obviously, creep in because they are all things that are connected.

My art practice has taken me to new personal territory that I am still attempting to navigate. Over the past year or more I had treaded into an area that has now got me recooping much of my art practice that I had put in a “no man’s land.” It was somewhere, but nowhere, hovering around me without my acknowledgement, until very recently. There has always been the desire on my part to more fully integrate art and the creative process with the rest of my life. So, again, hiking through the woods in Florida, Oregon, California, Ohio, Georgia, Puerto Rico, or Italy is all the same for me. It is a creative act, yet I also become a vessel for that space to act upon me. It is also a tool that pushes me into learning, creating, and ultimately enhancing my life.
