Mother of Invention

2 Jun 2008 In: web, internet, blogs

They say that necessity is the mother of invention yet, there are times when desparation also gives birth to invention. I’m not desperate but, I’ve had to be more creative and resourceful than I thought I would have because of my decision to stick with a layout I like that won’t accept many menu items. Once I get the proposed content worked out I should be able to determine the exact number of pages I need to add. I’m afraid they’ll hae to be outside the database unless I can figure a way to make every single page of the site dynamic.

I’ve had so much work to do I haven’t done any photography and, that includes my daily selfpics (which are still waiting for my attention to create their web galleries). I think I should do them as Flash galleries, which means no easy updating without a total recreation. I have SlideShowPro so, it should be easy enough. It’s only the sorting process that prevents me from moving forward.

Also, after the past week or so I should accept Paul’s description of me as a content manager and author. As much as I’d love to include more programming skills into my head, the reality is that I’m limited in time. Paul and I did have a laugh the other day at something silly I did but, I wasn’t paying attention. Now that I have my own server, I can do more experimenting. My first goal is to install Cake and create something but, that also will have to wait for time to open up. My first priority is to move all the web sites over to my server from Paul’s. I’m done two with several more to go. I would like to finish that process before the end I go out of town but, I think it best to do things without being rushed.

I moved, reinstalled and update to the latest version of WP on, MiamiWebServers. This is the subject of the opening paragraph; the one that requires creative manipulation. I have to practice on my own stuff before doing it for others. No more broken sites!

Summer Shaping Up

30 May 2008 In: personal

Busy work week for me. High intensity content work. Next week as well. Not much time to even take a photo. This is what I wanted isn’t it? I have worked toward this income poor summer really hard this past year. I’m glad it’s working out so far.

I do have one class to teach this summer, starting late June. It will b three days per week from 9:00 am to 1:45 pm. That’s one long class! I’ll have to slow down some during that time to devote more time to students.

Speaking of shaping up, I need to get back in some kind of shape. I’ve been hanging around with Paul so much I haven’t given much thought to exercise until just a couple weeks ago. Paul isn’t insterested in exercise but, he’s in need of a gut reduction, if you know what I mean. But, then I’m also an emabler by having made him some gooey chocolate brownies tonight. *sigh* Like is full on contradictions.

I have a big test tomorrow, working on my database. I thought I had transferred it to the new server but, I hadn’t. I was confused about what actually I was doing until 4 am Tuesday before my presentation. The layers of applications and software are getting added to by the day. I need to get a book with the commands used in terminal. I sort of remember some stuff having messed with dos about 12 yrs. ago. Remember when?

Upgrade Nightmare!

27 May 2008 In: web, internet, blogs

I tried to upgrade the blog on Monday only to end up needing Paul to fix it. It took him an hour or more to fix whatever happened. Well, I deleted a couple of necessary files thinking it wasn’t necessary. I should have searched through the file itself rather than seeing the filename.

One thing is for sure, making problems for myself like yesterday is a good learning process.

After all that, I got my server set up and my first domain moved and nameserver registered. Next on the list is for me to learn more mysql. In reality, next on my list(s) is PHP, mysql, xhtml & css. I need to know all those things better although, I don’t know much at all about PHP and mysql.

Earlier today, I met with client about huge site that is unsettled. We need a meeting of all principles and deveopers to get this thing moving forward, if it really going to move forward. Having a clear idea of what the site is going to be will determine if it actually gets funded.

Then, I’ve been getting really sleepy around 6 pm for the past few days. I tried to not nap because that means I won’t go to sleep until 3 am, or something. That’s not good when I want to get up earlier.

I’ve been working on, attempting to work on, a Keynote presentation for the first day of class. I’m not sure I’ll have it finished but, it will be an overview of digital photography. I saw a recent presentation by a local photographer that I thought was kewl and effective for a young, non-reading audience. These days, students seem more attuned to visuals than actually opening a book to read something. Photography is a hands-on activity anyway but, I like to read some background material when learning new things for the purpose of having some idea what to do if I run into a problem.

Yesterday

21 May 2008 In: personal, web, internet, blogs

My grandfather’s youngest sister, the last of his siblings, had a birthday yesterday. She was a very interesting lady. She was kind and gentle, easily forgiving those that dissed her, stole from her, and took advantage of her. In some of those cases I felt it was mandatory to distance herself but, she refused. No sordid details here as they bring up anger and even resentment. How can the people who work for you just blatently steal from you and, in the process steal MY belongings?

Anyway, she had a stroke and died in the hospital. I loved her dearly although, I only got to know her by the time I was about 28 yrs.

Also, yesterday was extremely hot and humid. I haven’t had a/c on in my new place because there are lots of windows and lots of shade. It’s hot but, this is, afterall, Florida. Without refrigerated air, this state would not be so over populated. Yes, overpopulated. Our water resources are not able to handle a huge upsurge in population. We’ve been on water restrictions for at least a year now.

TODAY, I finally got my book, “Web Form Design.” Very good reading.
