night out on the town bowling

// March 30th, 2007 // No Comments » // Blog

Last night and the night before, Paul called to go have a bit to eat. Wednesday night we went to Hillsboro Beach, a place I had never been, had some dinner, talked and, walked out on the pier. It was windy and the waves high and rough. Paul was still upset about his freaky, female neighbor who kicked in his front door.

Last night we had dinner again with the addition of another of his friends, who happens to be a student on my university campus. I asked him the days and times of his classes so that I might go find him between classes. Anyway, after dinner we went bowling. I haven’t been bowling in years! The two lesbians playing next to us were engaging in a spit swapping contest, something I’m not fond of. I just do not like such public displays hetero or homo couples. If you’re in a gay bar that’s one thing (which I still don’t like) but, in a public place, that’s just crude. Paul’s friend thought it was hot. Jeeeze.

What is it?

// March 28th, 2007 // No Comments » // Blog

insert your guess as to what this is...

If you want, instead of answering what this is, you can ask me a question although, at the rate they’re arriving, nobody is much interested in doing that. (one thing is for sure, focus when taking macro shots is critical but, is more difficult that it seems. Depth of field and, angle of the camera play crucial parts in the process.)

Busy Monday

aristolochia stamen

Another busy Monday has come to an end. With three classes I had little time to attend to my project deadline and, tomorrow morning I have to go to Home Depot to buy some material for delivery to the Univ. I almost did it last week. I can wait no longer.

Tomorrow I also hope to see and talk to a member of the student population that is just plain hawt. He’s an adult thank goodness. Now, if I can just get past the initial jitters, even though I have already talked to him before though, much too briefly.

StoneAge Antiques & stoner attack

// March 25th, 2007 // No Comments » // Blog

stoneage_antiques544

While working on my deadline looming project (Friday), I remembered a place along the Miami River that would be ripe for some of what I needed, StoneAge Antiques. There is so much here you could spend the entire day and not see it all! I decided to try my camera celphone.

Lat night, gawd, what a nut job! I was leaving my friend Paul’s apt. when his neighbor standing at the end of the walkway but on the sidewalk says to me, “What’s your fucking problem? You have a fucking problem?” I knew she was crazy, having keyed Paul’s car because she didn’t like where he parked on the public street. I turned and started walking back to Paul’s apt. when she leaps up the steps and starts running after me. I dashed into Paul’s apt and laughing said to call the police. Then, she restarts the cursing the kicks in Paul’s front door. 911 and the cops are there in a couple minutes. She hides inside her apt. with her male friend who was yelling at her to get inside. They turn off the light and peek out at us talking to the cops. Paul will has been wanting to get her doing something crazy. We think she’s a coke head but, drugs and alcohol is a nasty mix. Next is the warrant. Wild ending to my evening.

Jeb Bush denied honorary degree at U. of Florida

// March 24th, 2007 // No Comments » // Blog

This article I found today is noteworthy since I work for the State of Florida University System. There has been lots of talk about what this Bush has done with the educational system here and, it doesn’t seem to want to fade away. Policies implemented take a long time to change because only with time can we really know how those policies work. Since I’m not a fulltime instructor I never have the opportunity vote on anything anyway.

University of Florida President Bernie Machen says he was “tremendously disappointed” with the school’s Faculty Senate vote to deny former Gov. Jeb Bush an honorary degree.

The Senate voted 38-28 Thursday against giving the honorary degree to Bush, who left office in January.

March answers…

// March 23rd, 2007 // No Comments » // Blog

ubermunkey asks: “Given the choice to go back and change one decision at a crux in your life, what would that be?”

Answer: In retrospect, of course, I would. At one point in my life I said I wouldn’t change a thing about my life and the decisions I made. At this moment I would turn the clock back to 1976 when I first came to Florida and would have bought a piece of property even though I didn’t like anything I saw. I had the money and should have reinvested it into real estate after selling my house in SF.

(I’m still open to more questions if you care to ask…)

Macro’s are gettin’ better

mangrove dried mar2007

I was thinking about what to do for my proposal, meaning what format: drawing, photo, composite, etc., when I current walked into the lab and asked to use the paper cutter. I told him he needs to use the right tools for the job (cutting matte board) and loaned him my box cutter and stainless steel straight edge that I bought myself back in the early 70s. It still looks brand new and, it has had lots of use. I take care of my tools!

Anyway, his interruption while prepping something to eat got me back to opening shoeboxes and pulling out little pieces of organic objects I’ve stored away because I think they’re beautiful. Such a pack rat I am but, I make not bones about it. It is what it is. The only object bigger than 2 inches that I photographic is the one above.

Tomorrow morning I’ll start fresh and attack my proposal with some drawings and the photos should designate the locations of where my art should be placed the the rich, black, mud of the small mangrove tidal area of my project.

postscript: Are they no questions for me as the month of answering questions ends soon? I’m open to most any question so, ask if you care to. I’ll be as honest as I can in answering… I wouldn’t lie anyway.

More macro

bird  skull 3cm

Not much time today but, I did try out a few more macro shots. This example is with the 20mm & 36mm only and, is of a skull that’s 3cm long. This is my smallest skull. I’ll most likely work on more over the next few days but, I have a proposal to get finished over the weekend with a deadline next week! Plus, I have to buy materials for my project out of state this weekend. Speaking of materials, I bought 100lbs.+ of clay to be used for the projects. This is a new material for me but, I’ve got good help to show me what I need to do.

However, I will make one gallery opening of a friend/ curator that shows at her home. http://www.cjazzart.com/ See you there!

seed pod

Finally, I can do macro with my new camera. I bought extension tubes instead of a macro lens because I thought it would be more versatile and, because I’ve had extension tubes with my previous film cameras and found they were very much what I liked. I only played with them, 12mm, 20 mm and, 36mm all attached together, taking a few shots before bed but, today I’ll go experiment some more after class.
