More Matthew Barney

Needless to say I forgot to make reference to this article previously published on Miami Art Exchange back in April, 2006. They were written by my friend, Steven Kaplan (NYC). Both articles include images.

Yesterday I went with Paul to meet up with another of our computer friends. Of couse, most of what they talked about was beyond my understanding in a practical application sense but, I’m learning new stuff. I had already eaten something before going out but, decided to have a drink (ron y siete en jueves=rum & 7UP on Thursday). Since I’m also still learning how best to use my camera’s settings, I took some pics, most of which were tests.

I’ve spent more money than in a long time lately but, I need more RAM. My computer keeps getting bogged down when I open several apps that I use for web design: Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Photoshop, Word, and maybe another one on occasion.

I’m not sure what I’m going to do to bring in the New Year but, I’ll probably find something good to do.

Drawing Restraint 9

// December 27th, 2006 // No Comments » // Blog

I saw the “Making of Drawing Restraint 9″ (though technically not a “film”) with Paul on Christmas eve. He wasn’t impressed and, didn’t think vasoline could be considered a sculptural material. We obviously differ but, the full movie would be something I would love to see.

Christmas Day and day after

// December 26th, 2006 // No Comments » // Blog

Although I may not celebrate Christmas regularly, which I never have, this year was not too bad as a holiday. Holidays involved with spending money have never been good holidays for me even when I was young and was given money to spend by my parents. I was more motivated to buy the gift I wanted because I knew I wasn’t going to get what I had asked for. I don’t ask for anything anymore so, don’t you try it. ;-)

Anyway, Paul and I have been hanging out more lately for reasons that might seem obvious but, might not. Anyway, he kept asking me what I wanted for Christmas. I wanted to buy him some clothes but, he bought them himself (since he refused to tell me what size pants he wears). I told him having a really good dinner was better than a hooker any day (male or female). So, that’s what we did. We went to the Seminole Hard Rock (gambling, stores, and dining in a huge complex). Dinner was great! Salad, grilled chicken on creamed spinach, pumpkin cheesecake, and several drinks of Malibu rum & Coke. There was a live jazz group too. (Images of drinks and me driving… Paul was driving except for me driving home. Those drinks were expensive and very little alcohol, unlike Art Basel Miami Beach where all the drinks were free and VERY potent, more like 80% liquor and 20% mixer. One drink during the art fairs had me knowing I had a drink!)

Afterwards, we walked around watching the texas hold’em poker games. It was interesting but, I’m not inclined to spend a dime of my money that way. Paul was good company and I really enjoyed myself.

Today, I ran errands for my friend who went home to Cuba for Christmas and New Years. I also stopped by one of my favorite parks to “play with my camera” some more. I’m still not totally satisfied with my image making and have been going from manual to autofocus, and changing exposure values seeking what is going to make me pleased with the results. I haven’t printed any images yet but, I want to like what I see on the computer, too.

More Art Basel Miami Beach

// December 22nd, 2006 // No Comments » // Blog

In my attempt at posting Art Basel Miami Beach in a more comprehensive visual way, I’ve attempted to put pages together that take things out of the natural time sequence and put them where they might have a bit more of a relationship.

I travelled to some venues more than once and there was no desire to do a daily walking tour since I knew others were doing it.

I have two more posts of the ABMB events. They should be up by Monday. Sunday, VERY EARLY, I have to take a friend to the airport so, tomorrow, Saturday a lot might not get done.

New Friends from Germany

// December 19th, 2006 // No Comments » // Blog

Several years ago Heliumcowboy Artspace in Hamburg, Germany linked to my MAEX Art Blog and we emailed a couple times. However, this year they were part of -scope Miami. That was a pleasant surprise, as we all know how small the world has become because of this thing called the internet. It is always a miracle in my eyes that such random communications as a casual email can lead to new friendships. I hope Alex Diamond and the Heliumcowboy Artspace don’t mind me linking to them via their photos. They were some VERY handsome guys… I should have gone to the beach with them now that I see these.

And, the hunky cop, well, we do have some here but, I didn’t see this guy in person. I personally know a few on the force in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and Broward County.

Men Shopping

// December 18th, 2006 // No Comments » // Blog

Finally, I got my ex-roommate out of his jeans! Seriously! But, it’s not what came into your mind at the first thing. I’ve been trying to get him to buy some chinos, khakis, slacks, or something to wear besides jeans and, today we went shopping for clothes. I was surprised but, he got some really nice stuff, including casual/dressy shirts and new shoes!

I also bought some new pants, shoes and a few casual shirts. Shoes I absolutely needed but, the pants are a replacement for some I accidently splashed bleach on some time ago. They’re a mocha chocolate color which I love.

We started off the day thinking of going to the computer show to buy some things but, went to get brunch instead. Then shopping for several hours. Then a movie… that new Casino Royale, which I liked even though it was not a typical 007 movie.

Anyway, a good day by any standards I would say. :-)

Art Hangover!

// December 12th, 2006 // No Comments » // Blog

Art Hangover!
Originally uploaded by artlab.

Although some might try to deny it, we’re now suffering from an Art Hangover! No steady caravan of human hoofs passing in front of paintings, sculptures, photos, work-on-paper, sipping many varieties of wine, champagne, vodka, sipping gin out of silver flasks or, listening to loud music pounding out of every doorway. Keanu Reeves has gone back into hiding as has all the other famous and not so famous ones. After one day of supposed rest we are still oozy, weazy, tipsy, and out of breath and in need of another full night of sleep even if it is just enough to get us through to December 25th (celebrate it or not) and, even into New Year’s Eve and its attendant parties and 24 hours of dancing. At any rate… more will be offered about the past few days but, right this moment the phone is ringing. It’s about an art project that has been commissioned and it needs immediate attention. Back tomorrow? Yes. We’ll have more time then.

Did I mention I bought a new camera? Nothing special but, it fit in my budget and it’s paid for even though I was tempted to put part of it on plastic and get something more expensive. Nikon D50. No plastic purchases for me in months!

Art Basel Miami Beach – pre-closing

// December 10th, 2006 // No Comments » // Blog

Art Basel Miami closes tonight but, I have to finish up my grading of students since it’s due tomorrow morning. After that, I’ll have more time to say something about the many, many events.

A few images have been posted to my Flickr account because that’s the easiest to handle at the moment. There are more images but, they need more editing. GO HERE
