Saltz and Pepper

// September 29th, 2006 // No Comments » // Blog

Jerry Saltz was at the university on Thursday. He’s a very good speaker. I think I upset him a bit when I walked out of his lecture but, my class was waiting outside the classroom door for me. I turned and said, sorry my class is now and have to leave. More later…. (with image)

Auntie Sue

Auntie Sue
Originally uploaded by artlab.

She talked about her own death a few years ago. But, she was okay with her maker and had no fear of death. Her husband, my father’s brother, died before her because he neglected his prostate problem until it was too late. Both my aunt and uncle were the most loving, generous, and fun loving people you’d ever want to meet. Aunt Sue was honestly one of the world’s best cooks. My uncle wouldn’t have married anyone that couldn’t cook equally as well as my grandmother. Praise the lawd, I had nothing but good cooks around me all my life! My mom, my aunts, my grandmothers were all great cooks. Now you know where I get my cooking skills from. Aunt Sue I say could boil a cup of water and when you drank it you’d swear it was the best water you ever tasted! I will miss her dearly and deeply. She leaves three beautiful daughters and a multitude of grandchildren, neices and nephews that all loved her dearly. Aunt Sue we will miss you!

The funeral will be tomorrow, Wednesday, in Cincinnati, Ohio (which I will not be able to attend, unfortunately).

S. Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship Awardees

// September 23rd, 2006 // No Comments » // Blog

img2006-09-21-003.jpg

The S. Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship Awardees exhibition is here at the university. I know several of the artists that received the cash awards. I wonder, however, if they are awarded the money in one lump sum of divided over several payouts like when I won some awards. I hate getting the money paid out over the entire year because it doesn’t allow for that major purchase that one needs to make. Oh well… Anyway, one of the awardees did a audio/visual lecture on her work dealing with the Florida Cracker population. A population that is slowly disappearing.

There are some Florida Crackers that live upstate where I used to live. I really enjoy being around some of them because they are so down home and honest folks. And, even though I may not live like them, eat like them or, talk like them, I respect them and what they’re about. I’m a person that loves learning new things and exploring new territories. Believe me, or not.

(added: Sat., 23 Sept., 2006) The second audio/visual presentation for the evening was given by Allison Smith, a New York based artist who is orginally from Virginia, and spoke about her current work and upcoming work for the Schmidt Center Gallery’s 2007 schedule. Smith’s work has developed around the “muster.” “Muster” is an old Middle English word meaning “a cause to gather”. Musters were a vital part of colonial mid-Atlantic life. Smith has taken the muster and the multitude of arts and crafts from that era and created a fascinating body of contemporary work.

Posting has been light because of a number of circumstances however, it is mostly due to not currently having an office in which to work. I am looking for a relocation venue in southeastern Broward County: Ft. Lauderdale, Dania, Hollywood, Hallandale.

Miami Art Exchange also has an exhibition package that is looking for a venue. It includes local and international artists. If you want to know more about it or, have work that might be appropriate for a future exhibition use the comment section at the bottom of the post.

Miami Art Exchange is due for a redesign as well. Some design ideas have been tossed around and some seem to work pretty well. The site is due for a bit more color this time around.

Part of the redesign means changing content as well. Our sibling site is due for an official launch soon so, watch out for the notification. It’s called, Artlab33.com, and will be more of the business arm of the operations. The local events calendar will be moved there but, because of hackers, the calendar will not take its previous format, unfortunately. This site is also where information about advertising and web design services will be located. Even though we don’t currently have a office location, the design team is still intact.

In the next few days the 2005 recepients of the Cultural Consortium Fellowships will be looked at more closely. It is located at the Schmidt Center and Ritter Galleries on the Boca Raton campus of Florida Atlantic Univ.

Uggla on 1st base – Mets vs. Marlins

// September 13th, 2006 // No Comments » // Blog

I went with friends to the Marlins baseball game but, it started after a rain delay. Finally, got going in the first inning then, another rain delay. We didn’t stay for because my friend had to drive to Tampa early in the morning but, we sat right behind first base at ground level. That was my first time in Dolphins Stadium and, I was impressed. I wish it was a football game. I would love to see Zach Thomas in person.

In the pic, the first baseman, Carlos Delgado, played for the Marlins last year. He ended up hitting the deciding two-hit play later in the 8th inning that sealed the win for the Mets. On first is our candidate for rookie of the year, Dan Uggla. He’s hawt. Short and well built. :-)

Done Moving Out

// September 10th, 2006 // No Comments » // Blog

It took way too long but, I had no other choice. I finally got moved out of the house yesterday evening. I was exhausted but, took a shower and then went to Miami for some gallery openings and networking. I did podcasting using my phone instead of thinking about taking notes on the art to write something. My mind just wasn’t into do that. I was more interested in networking and trying to connect with some viable possibilities for an exhibition. I had already made a phone call to a property developer and, a friend and sponsor of Miami Art Exchange suggested the empty storefront downstairs from her gallery. So, that needs submission like a.s.a.p.!

The podcasting needs refinement as I haven’t done any in a while. And, my prewritten script is packed away in a box, a box that I am not sure where it is currently located.

Life Moves On…

// September 6th, 2006 // No Comments » // Blog

Interview by Steven KaplanThe Brook Dorsch Gallery interviewed by Steven Kaplan

As was mentioned previously, the property manager entered our premises without authorization, police notified, and now are being taken to court on a number of counts, most of which are not being disclosed online. In reality, the entire incident started some time ago with the property mgt. actually stealing money off the top. Things have gotten ugly but, I have been forced to move before I was financially prepared to do so. We all had to move and put pressure on us all. I’ve spent so much time looking for a storage place I have had no time to find a place to live. As a result, please forgive the lack of posts over the next little while. Thank you.

I am resourceful and adaptable and will survive. Thank you all for your support. I will email those I owe emails to later today. I have only the univ. to access the internet at the present time.

No time, bad times

// September 4th, 2006 // No Comments » // Blog

Sorry, no time to post but, things have been very bad. I had to call the police yesterday because the property mgt. thugs stole all my food and I mean everything. They didn’t put it in the dumpster, they stole it. Long story and no time to explain but, they are being taken to court.
